Status Quo for Ponoka

Fire Advisory from last Fall remains in effect

More and more places around the province are issuing fire advisories but Ponoka Regional Fire Services never canceled the caution it put in place last year.

"We're approving permits on a case by case basis, you know, your back fire pit can still be used, but we're encouraging our residents to please refrain from doing non-essential burning at this time. We are very dry, especially with this wind that we're receiving, any moisture we did get is drying us out completely" said Protective Services Coordinator Donna Noble.

Other measures that fire officials could consider, a restriction or a total ban, are not being contemplated at this time.

"For presently, I think, we're gonna keep it status quo. It seems to be working very well" according to Noble who added "fire bans are really our last resort, if we can help it, we prefer not to get to that point. That's why we're asking residents to help us to help you."

Residents are reminded permits, which are required until October 31, are free and can picked up at the Ponoka County Administration Office or by filling out a form on the County's website.
