PONOKA -- Repair and clean-up of a water main break last week in Ponoka have now been completed.
The incident occurred in the morning of March 4th and disrupted water service at a trio of local schools. Ponoka Elementary School, The Brick Learning Centre, and Ponoka’s Bright Futures Play Academy, were all forced to send students home early due to the issue. In addition, water service was also disrupted at the Wolf Creek School Division's Transportation and Facilities Department.
Originally it was expected that the affected schools would be closed on March 5th, however, water service was restored and classes went on as scheduled. Despite this, an extra day was required to restore water service to Bright Futures Play Academy and the WCSD's Transportation and Facilities Department.
Public work crews were on scene at 54th Street starting on Tuesday to make the necessary repairs, which prompted the temporary closure of the road between 48th Avenue and 49th Avenue. By Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed to the One FM that the road had reopened to traffic, and that all repairs and clean-up operations had been completed.
Water main breaks are known to occur when temperatures suddenly rise after weeks or months of frigid cold.
