Ponoka council seat stays vacant until 2025

Ted Dillon’s seat on Ponoka Town Council will stay vacant until local residents go to the polls in October 2025.
Town council requested an extension from Alberta Municipal Affairs, and the requested has been granted.
The reason for the request was unclear, until Mayor Kevin Ferguson spoke to the One.
“Just out of respect for a great man in this community, we decided to make a request of the minister to hold the seat open until the next election” Ferguson said.
While there is a cost associated with holding a byelection, Ferguson says that was never a consideration.
Dillon passed away on March 9th. He served for many years as a councilor and more than two decades as the town’s fire chief.
Ferguson described Dillon as everyone’s friend and that Ponoka had lost an an icon.
“That’s how important this man was to us,” Ferguson stated.
