Its annual fundraiser is underway

Old MacDonald Kennels (OMK) just east of Ponoka is currently holding its annual Sunflower Fundraiser. Proceeds from the event go towards helping the shelter which is overcrowded with cats and dogs.

The situation isn't unusual according to the organization's operator.  "We just see a huge increase of animals and shelters all through Alberta. It's very, very difficult to find them home," said Martine Huijssoon who added "there's a huge increase in the amount of days that animals are staying in the shelter before we rehome them."

OMK, which takes in a lot of strays, offers its services to a large area.

"The shelters are full, we just cannot keep up, but we try, we're not giving up, but it is hard. It is just hard," said Huijssoon.

"There's always a lot of animals that need help, but you know, some need extra vet care, they need to stay for extended time before they're better again or they come in pregnant. So they are staying with us for 6 to 8 weeks before the puppies are weaned."

OMK is asking for donations to help them keep up with the demand.

"People are very generous and we're very, very thankful."
