Stony Plain, AB

The Town of Stony Plain is excited to announce its selection as a recipient of the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), managed and distributed through the crown corporation, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

This prestigious recognition comes with a grant of over $5 million. The funding from HAF will catalyze the Town’s vision for the future, accelerating key initiatives outlined in our 2024-2026 Corporate PlanHousing Strategy, and Uniquely Stony Plain Municipal Development Plan. These efforts are aimed at promoting and streamlining residential development to create a more resilient and inclusive Stony Plain.

“Stony Plain is thrilled to be chosen as the recipient of the Government of Canada’s Housing Accelerator Fund, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our community,” says Mayor William Choy. “This significant investment in Stony Plain’s growth and housing development will have a profound impact on the implementation of key initiatives in our 2024-2026 Corporate Plan, and broader Housing Strategy and Uniquely Stony Plain Municipal Development Plan. The Housing Accelerator Fund will not only advance critical projects that are essential to promoting and streamlining residential development, but also further position Stony Plain as a future-ready destination equipped for families and businesses to move to and invest in.”

“This grant from the HAF is a significant boost to our efforts in creating a more resilient and inclusive community,” says General Manager of Planning and Infrastructure Brett Newstead. “With this funding, the Town is able to accelerate key initiatives that will promote and facilitate residential development and expand affordable housing options for current and future residents."

The implementation of seven key initiatives funded in part by HAF will enable us to build more diverse and affordable housing options for current and future residents. These initiatives include:

  • Introducing workflow and e-permitting software to reduce application processing times
  • The creation of new internal processes related to planning, development, and engineering
  • Expanding the Infill Policy
  • Revising town-wide parking requirements
  • An update to the Land Use Bylaw
  • Mixed-use redevelopment of underused municipal properties
  • Developing legal agreements between landowners and non-profit organizations to enhance affordable housing partnerships
