Stony Plain, AB
At the Regular Council Meeting on March 24, Council passed the Cemetery Bylaw. The bylaw was first introduced to Council on December 9, 2024, with minor amendments made before second and third readings. The passing of this bylaw marks a key milestone as the Town of Stony Plain moves closer to opening the non-denominational municipal cemetery in 2026.
The Cemetery Bylaw provides clear, high-level regulations for the use, maintenance, and management of the cemetery. It outlines rules for interment rights, marker installation, maintenance standards, and general conduct to help preserve a dignified, well-maintained space where individuals can honour and remember their loved ones.
“The passing of the Cemetery Bylaw is a meaningful step forward as we prepare to open Stony Plain’s non-denominational municipal cemetery,” says Mayor William Choy. “This project is deeply important to our community, and we’re committed to creating a space where loved ones can be remembered and legacies preserved.”
“The Cemetery Bylaw lays the groundwork for how the municipal cemetery will operate and be cared for,” says Manager of Engineering Khalid Aziz. “It’s an important piece of legislation to ensure we have clear standards in place to guide respectful use, preserve the site’s integrity, and support long-term sustainability as we move toward opening in 2026.”
Construction of the cemetery is expected to begin in May and take approximately five months to complete. To learn more about the municipal cemetery, visit the Cemetery page.
