BEAUMONT -- Traffic calming initiatives in Beaumont have garnered mixed reactions from the public.

The measures implemented during the summers of 2023 and 2024 included curb extensions installed along 56A Street, 55th Avenue, and Rue Montalet. This was done in an attempt to improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

However, according to the results of recent public consultation, many residents have expressed dissatisfaction. Most of the concerns remark that the traffic calming curbs create a disruption to the flow of traffic, and force individuals to drive with added caution. As part of a survey of 636 residents, 84 per cent of respondents viewed the existing curb extensions as "not so effective" or "not at all effective" in improving pedestrian safety.

Meantime, pedestrians noted that they did not notice a difference or feel safer with the curb extensions in place, while 11 per cent of cyclists felt safer with the curb extensions and 89 per cent did not feel safer. Among drivers, 20 per cent reported slowing down when approaching curb extensions, while only 8 per cent became more aware of pedestrians near intersections.

In total, 83 per cent of respondents indicated they were unlikely, or very unlikely to support additional traffic safety measures. Many respondents suggested replacing the curb extensions with a roundabout, while others suggested additional police enforcement to slow drivers and the continued installation of Rapid Flashing Beacon pedestrian crossing lights. Several residents also suggested the use of other traffic calming measures to slow down traffic such as speed humps.

At this time the recommendation provided by a traffic engineer and road safety professional is to replace the temporary traffic calming curbs with median islands.
