LEDUC -- The City of Leduc could be getting a brand-new public school.

According to the Black Gold School Division, their new three-year capital plan includes plans for a new school for the west-side of the city. The school would serve students from Kindergarten to Grade 9, and would be built in the Blackstone neighborhood.

The BGSD says the key driver of the project is the rapid growth in school enrollment across the city. They say that the City of Leduc has seen an enrollment growth of around 2.5 per cent in each of the past four years, and that the local school system is now at 86 per cent capacity. The largest increase has come during the current school year, as enrollment has grown by 3.1 per cent.

It's expected that the new school would cost a total of $49,000,000 for its full construction. It's currently being planned for the 2026-2027 school year, but will first need to be approved by Alberta Education prior to any ground being broken.

Meantime, the Black Gold School Division is also planning upgrades to East Elementary School -- which would come in the way of modernization and new additions. This would take place during the 2027-2028 school year at the cost of $13,300,000. Modernization upgrades for Beaumont's Robina Baker School are planned for year three of the capital plan, as well as the previously announced new K-9 school with a 950-student capacity.
