LEDUC -- The City of Leduc is drafting a new Urban Centre Redevelopment Plan.

The goal of the plan is to revitalize the Leduc Urban Centre, which includes the Central Business District, the Telford House area and the Alexandra Park neighbourhood. The City says the new UCRP promotes mixed-use development, walkability, and cohesive neighbourhood design while maintaining flexibility for future growth. Leduc Senior Planner Duncan Martin says the plan will focus on several aspects.

"This plan focuses on business retention and attraction," said Martin. "Beautification, place-making, regional tourism and our historic Main Street."

The Draft for the new Urban Centre Redevelopment Plan lists three priority levels for action once implemented:

  • Tier 1: Streetscape upgrades, active transportation improvements, zoning bylaw updates, and downtown events.
  • Tier 2: Parkland and plaza acquisition, heritage designation, and wayfinding.
  • Tier 3: More trees, multifunctional heritage hubs, and arts programming.

"The vision for Leduc’s Urban Centre is that it becomes an accessible, safe, and inclusive area with diverse housing, business opportunities, high-quality urban design, and multi-modal transportation connections," said Teaka Broughm, City of Leduc Director of Planning and Economic Development. "The plan will guide how redevelopment meets this vision through efficient land use, housing diversity, investment into public spaces and connectivity."

The next step for the Urban Centre Redevelopment Plan will be its first reading, followed by a public hearing. Final approval is expected in the Spring of this year.
