LEDUC -- The City of Leduc is planning to expand it's municipal boundary.
The new initiative would see the annexation of lands to the south and southeast of the city’s existing municipal boundary. Based on an evaluation of land supply, the City says they may require at least 38 quarter-sections of lands currently within the municipal boundary of Leduc County.
According to the city, the goal of the annexation would be to accommodate Leduc’s projected growth through 2076. They note Leduc is one of the fastest growing communities in Alberta, and that the move would avoid real-world negative impacts on residents. These would include higher housing prices or more costly infrastructure.
"Working with Leduc County through this process is a priority for the City," said Leduc Mayor Bob Young. "And we look forward to connecting with County residents, City residents, and other stakeholders to share information and hear their feedback and ideas."
The process is expected to be a lengthy one, likely stretching in 2027. Some of the next steps will include an in-depth technical study, work with Leduc County to develop the annexation application, and public engagement with County landowners and City residents. They'll also need to file an application with the Land and Property Rights Tribunal, and note that the provincial government will make the final decision.
