LEDUC COUNTY -- Leduc County has responded to the City of Leduc's newly proposed annexation plans.
The County's Mayor Tanni Doblanko says she's disappointed that the City crafted their plans without acting in consultation with Leduc County. This comes as the City of Leduc announced this week that it's approved a Notice of Intent to annex at least 38 quarter-sections of County lands. The proposed plan would expand the municipal boundary of the City of Leduc to the south and south-east.
Speaking to The One FM, Doblanko expressed her displeasure that the City decided to move ahead without collaborating with Leduc County.
"We're profoundly disappointed at the way it came forward," said Mayor Doblanko. "We have a long history of working collaboratively with the City of Leduc, and planning things together, and this actually came without joint-planning or consultation".
According to the city, the goal of the annexation would be to accommodate Leduc’s projected growth through 2076. However, Doblanko is calling for the current plans to be scrapped, and be redone in consultation with the County.
"That we sit down council to council," said Mayor Doblanko. "And revisit the inter-municipal development plan, where we actually plan land use around the City of Leduc together, and understand each others needs".
She adds that if the City of Leduc had consulted the County, then they would've had a better understanding about growth pressures, as well as how much land supply the City has left.
