fire advisory
Monday, April 15, 2024
The City of Leduc is now under a fire advisory due to the dry conditions and the increased fire hazard. Fires are still allowed in the City of Leduc; however, a restriction or ban may be called if conditions worsen. Residents are asked to please use caution when burning.
The fire advisory is being implemented as we enter into what is expected to be a high-risk wildfire season in Alberta. Proactive fire prevention activities are more essential than ever in protecting our community.
The City of Leduc works to reduce the risk of wildfires from occurring on public property and spreading to private property through regular park maintenance and grass cutting. This minimizes fuel for the fire to spread and clears the way for emergency response teams if needed.
Residents are also encouraged to take an active role in both emergency preparedness and wildfire prevention to help protect our community.
How residents can help prevent wildfires:
- Yard and property maintenance: prune trees, maintain yard, clean roof and gutters, clear away easily ignitable debris and materials from under decks and away from buildings
- Proper disposal of cigarette butts in fire safe containers
- Clearing away debrisk from the hot exhaust of vehicles, ATVs and yard equipment
- Backyard fire pit safety: ensure your fire pit meets the Fire Services Bylaw requirements; keep water nearby; do not leave the fire unattended or allow fire to burn out on its own
- Understand the difference between fire advisories, restrictions and bans
- Fire advisory: a notice to use extra caution when burning. Permits for open-air industrial and agricultural fires remain in effect, and campfires, backyard fire pits and all cooking devices can be used.
- Fire restriction: prohibits open-air industrial or agricultural based fires. Open-air industrial and agricultural fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued during the restriction. Allows campfires in campgrounds, backyard fire pits, solid fuel burning devices such as charcoal briquettes and smokers, and natural gas and propane appliances like barbeques and portable propane fire pits.
- Fire ban: prohibits open-air industrial or agricultural based fires, campfires in campgrounds, backyard fire pits, and solid fuel burning devices such as charcoal briquettes and smokers. Open-air industrial and agricultural fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued during the ban. Allows the use of natural gas and propane appliances like barbeques and portable propane fire pits.
