BEAUMONT -- The City of Beaumont has given first reading to their amended land use bylaw for the Ruisseau Neighbourhood.

The amendments would redistrict a portion of the land to allow for a new multi-family development, which is described as being too narrow in size for the current land-use bylaw. Beaumont City Planner Brenda Kolenbrander says the redistricting for the proposed townhouse development would create more variety in the Ruisseau Neighbourhood.

"The proposal aligns with the Ruisseau Outline Plan development concept," said Beaumont City Planner Brenda Kolenbrander. "Administration believes that the neighbourhood character impacts would be quite minimal."

While the bylaw amendment passed it's first reading, it did receive concern from Beaumont Councillor Nathan Netelenbos, who was the only member of council to vote against moving the changes forward.

"Without the applicant present we're not able to ask what the intent is, and I struggle with that" said Netelenbos. "I don't feel like my questions were adequately answered so I don't feel comfortable moving this to the next reading."

The bylaw amendments for the Ruisseau Neighbourhood will now be headed to a future public hearing.
